A one-of-a-kind theatre production is officially underway in Regina.
“We are absolutely thrilled to have received permission from Neil Young’s team to stage his rock opera Greendale in our community,” said Elliott. “It’s a rare honour.”
The production will raise funds to support activities of the Regina Youth Climate Justice Coalition.
Greendale, written by Young in 2003, tells the story of the Green family, who hold onto love and loyalty through turbulent times.
“Themes that address addictions, environmental collapse, corporate media, state surveillance, and internet-driven hate were forward-thinking in 2003, and more relevant than ever in 2026,” said Trish Elliott, SPIT! executive committee member.
“Despite some dark moments, the opera ends on an inspiring note of hope and solidarity. We hope the play will spark important conversations in Saskatchewan, and provide moral support for young people seeking climate justice in a place that’s not always friendly to the concept.”
Mr. Young presented the full opera during a 72-city tour in 2003 and 2004, and in a 2003 film.
“The only other production I know of that wasn’t done by Neil Young himself was by Undermain Theatre, based in Dallas, Texas,” said Elliott. Undermain staged Greendale in Dallas and New York in 2008.
“Greendale was my first production with Undermain so it holds a dear place in my heart,” Paul Demrad recalled in an email to SPIT! Demrad played bass in the rock opera’s fictional band, The Imitators, and is now Undermain’s general manager of marketing and public relations.
SPIT! aims to present Greendale in early 2027. Stay tuned for casting calls, workshops, and other related activities in the months to come.
